Research Visionary Award winners announced
Nutrition
Optoelectronics
As part of our 50th-anniversary celebrations, Rank Prize launched the Research Visionary Awards in early 2021, a competition open to early-career researchers in nutrition and optoelectronics at UK universities. We asked them to consider the following: over the past 50 years, advances in nutrition and optoelectronics, including visual science, have improved many aspects of human life. What might the next 50 years of scientific enquiry and discovery reveal? What future possibilities and challenges might research in these fields answer?
Six researchers were selected from a highly competitive pool to give their perspectives on the next 50 years of scientific endeavour in nutrition and optoelectronics. To prepare, the award winners will experience a tailored programme of workshops and one-to-one speaker and media training. They’ll get help with trend research, presentation design and artwork. Then they will each present their vision of the future at a half-day event at the Royal College of Physicians in London on 18th January 2022, hosted by Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE FRS.
The winners are (pictured clockwise from top left):
Dr Angie Burnett, Research Associate in the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge;
Dr Muneta Grace Kangara, Department of Agricultural and Environmental Science, School of Biosciences, University of Nottingham;
Dr Alice Bowen, Photon Science Institute, The University of Manchester;
Dr Alex Ramadan, Postdoctoral Reseacher University of Oxford, Department of Physics.
Dr Fiona Malcomson, Research Associate, Human Nutrition Research Centre, Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University;
Dr Fabien Massabuau, Department of Physics, University of Strathclyde.
